The famous meme why are you running is a classic, but it does it make you ask that question about your own life? Why do we do the things that we do? Are we driven by passion or do we let fear drive us? One helps us to build the life of our design, and the other lets us builds a life with the scraps that no one wants. Why are you running? Just know that by the end of this article you will stop running and face the life you were meant to live.

When I think about the question why are you running, I can speak about it in the literal sense. I was a track and field athlete. I ran all the way through high school, and I earned myself a full scholarship to Iowa State University. As a Cyclone, I went on to become an NCAA All-American and represent Canada in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Would I say that I was running to make the Olympics? No, I was not, I started running because I did not have the money in my family to go to college and I wanted to go. Running opened the doors to allow me to further my education.

Deciding I wanted to earn a scholarship was one of the most important decisions I have ever made in my life. Not because of what it led to but because it developed a passion and a purpose. That passion and purpose changed me.

When you know what your purpose is, it changes how you do everything. Your walk, talk, attitude, actions, and confidence all change. The reason for this change is that you now know why you are waking up every day. You are not just getting up hoping something happens. When the alarm clock goes off, you don’t want just to hit snooze anymore. Your purpose is powerful! It will give you a reason to shoot out of bed and attack the day.

 

The meme that made the famous why are you running gif posted above was making a point under the humor in the Nigerian Movie it came from called Pretty Liars. The point is that if you wander without paying attention in life before you know it you get swept away in another person’s dreams. The lady who started running took off with all her life and did not know why. She just saw someone else doing it and decided to take off. She had no purpose to keep her rooted.

The Definitive Purpose Test

Ask people what they want from life and 98% people will not know, or they will have a vague answer like:

  • I want to be happy
  • To get rich
  • To find love
  • I want to be healthy

When in reality to be definitive you need to be able to describe what you want down to the very last details. There is no doubt that you have thought through your plans and you can taste and smell all of your desires. There is no wavering in the sound of your voice when you speak on your definite purpose.

When people ask you why are you running? You know exactly why you are. Just like I was when I went after my dream of getting a scholarship or when I started Kho Health, the purpose must be there. To do those things, I had a vision in my mind of what could be. It is 100% impossible to outdo your vision.

 

Why Are You Running? How Fear Kills Dreams

Many people run because fear has the grip of death on them. We are irrational about many of the things we are scared of. We are scared of spiders because when we used to live outside, we could die from a spider bite. Today it is rare that people even get bitten by spiders, yet we still are afraid. We are scared that we are going to go broke and starve to death yet few in the western world do.

Why are you running? Is it because letting fear control you is so much easier than having the courage to stand tall for your dreams?

Fear is always whispering

  • You’re not good enough
  • Runaway
  • Why bother to try
  • You’re going to fail
  • You will embarrass yourself
  • Everyone is going to laugh at you

Fear will do anything to convince you that you will not come out on the other side stronger. When we look back on our lives, we know that the toughest times helped us to grow and make us who were are today. The problem is that we are hard-wired to avoid pain. We think easy means safe but in really easy means that we don’t have to feel pain today, but in the long run, we feel the pain. The pain of regret from living a life without any courage is a deep wound.

The great thing about the world we live in is that at any moment you can decide to be great! You can make one decision and determine that you are not going to run because you see everyone else running. Even though everyone else would quit in your situation, you are going to hang in there. You are going to remember why you started and that definite purpose you had for yourself in the long run. That is the life that you are going to live.

Work backward by first thinking about the life you want to live then figuring out what you can do to live that life. You will not get your dream life by taking whatever life throws at you. You get what you want by strategically planning every move you make and every step you take. Learning from every failure and using every success as a platform to get to the next level.
